MPG vs km/L: Conversion & Differences

Both MPG and km/L measure distance per unit of fuel. Converting between them requires accounting for the exact ratio between miles and kilometers, and gallons and liters.

Core Calculation Formula
1 US MPG = 0.425144 km/L | 1 km/L = 2.352146 US MPG

Multiply US MPG by 0.425144 to obtain km/L. Multiply km/L by 2.352146 to obtain US MPG.

Worked Example: 30 US MPG × 0.425144 = 12.75 km/L. Conversely, 15 km/L × 2.352146 = 35.28 US MPG.

Why Both Units Share the Same Mental Model

Unlike L/100km (which is an inverted scale where smaller numbers are more efficient), both MPG and km/L are direct efficiency metrics: the larger the number, the further your vehicle travels on one unit of fuel.

km/L is prevalent in Japan, India, Brazil, and parts of Southeast Asia, whereas MPG is used primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom.
